Maureen Holland will present “The Use of Restorative Practices to Address Campus Conflict: A Model for Addressing Individual Cases and Broader Community Harms” with Fabio Ayala, Assistant Director of the Center for Restorative Practices at Amherst College; Susie Belleci, Director of the Center for Restorative Practices at Amherst College; and Patricia Hamill, Co-Chair Title IX and Campus Disciplinary Group at Clark Hill, at the University of Vermont’s 34th annual Legal Issues in Higher Education conference. Maureen, Fabio, Susie, and Patricia will provide an overview of restorative justice and restorative practices, highlighting examples from the college and university context. They will present a model for using restorative practices to address both individual and community harms, including conflicts that arose on October 7, 2023, and its aftermath. They will also discuss how to create and support a restorative justice program on campus, determine when restorative practices are appropriate for addressing reported conduct, and identify additional resources for restorative justice.
