California employers dealing with their employees’ leaves of absence requests must sort through an alphabet soup of complex and ever-changing federal and California leave laws, including FMLA, CFRA, PDL, PFL, PSL, SDI, ADA, and CRD, and often the laws of counties, cities, and other municipalities. Employers often find themselves challenged and seeking clarification, including answering the baseline questions of what leave laws apply to an employee's request for leave. Attempting to determine whether and the extent to which these employee leave requests may overlap, interact, or run concurrently results in ever-increasing challenges in today’s workplaces. Employers increasingly face claims for getting leave requests wrong. They are threatened with significant exposure and costly and time-consuming litigation in the courts and claims brought to the California Civil Rights Department and the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Given this ever-changing scenario, employers should periodically review these complex laws, their policies and procedures, and best practices to effectively and proactively manage the myriad issues they may face concerning managing their employees’ requests for leave. Join Cozen O’Connor attorneys for a discussion of this alphabet soup of leave laws, the latest developments, and the best practices employers must follow to reduce legal risks.

For experienced human resources professionals, this webinar will be a practical refresher. For less experienced human resources professionals, this webinar will provide an introduction and real-world advice regarding leave of absence essentials. This webinar continues our 2023 California Employment Law Essentials series for HR Professionals.
